A year of writing and reading
An update and retrospective

I’m not going to tell you how old I am, feel free to guess, but I’ll tell you that on March 17th, I’m getting one year older. So it’s time for a retrospective. Let’s see where I was last year and what’s going on now.
Writing
Last March, 2023, I was ready to give up on my querying dreams. But not really, because I can’t give up, so instead I went kamikaze with some queries and pitch contests and sent them willy nilly. I even brought back an old book: The Wandering Dolls. I pitched an updated version as adult. And in July, it got me my agent, the wondrous Maria Brennan of Greyhound Literary.
Since then, I’ve published three short stories (one of which comes out this year, one of which you can read here). I’ve also gone on sub, which is hell and that’s all I’ll say about it. I’m now working on another old book, Godkillers, as well as a new book, Vae Victus, which I wrote during November 2023 #NaNoWriMo. And I’ve even come up with a dark romantasy idea. Take a look.

Reading
Last March, I was reading a lot of Eric LaRocca. Who is now one of my favorite authors and horror inspirations.
This March, I’m in the middle of several books, some for fun and some for inspo for Vae Victus.
Art
I’ve made a lot of progress this year, in part from buying Rebelle Pro 7, a traditionalist painting program that I love.
I went from this
to this.
It’s a small change but I feel like my skills are improving.
Music
Last year, I was listening to a lot of Taylor Swift.
This year, I’m …listening to a lot of Taylor Swift. But also Linkin Park, Rise Against, Green Day, and a lot of other bands I loved as a teen. I’m having so much fun reconnecting with my old favorites!
Newsletters
The newsletter was my new addition to the repertoire of social media. Here are my five favorite newsletters:
Thank you for reading C.J. Subko Books. This post is public so feel free to share it.
