Beating burnout 100 words at a time
What I've learned
Introduction
It’s been a lot of burnout here on the Subko farm. Even opening Scrivener makes my skin crawl. So I’ve started a goal: write 100 words a day. Yeah, that’s it. 100 words a day. Someone on Bluesky gave me the idea and it’s the best tip I’ve ever gotten. In the process, I’ve learned a few things.
Doing 100 words a day
The words don’t matter
When you’re trying to get over burnout, any words are good words. As long as you can string them together in semi-comprehensible order, it doesn’t matter. Just keep going.
It’s okay to skip a day
Don’t do it on purpose, but if you have something self-care related to do, like a concert or a hike, and you don’t have time to get in the 100 words, it’s okay if you miss your goal. Just don’t make a habit of it.
Set a timer
If it’s hard getting started, set a five minute timer. You can handle anything for five minutes, even the worst anxiety.
Pair it with self-care
The only way to treat burnout is with self-care. You need to indulge in hobbies that make you feel satisfied, happy, and accomplished.
Start it with a break
I took a month off before I started my 100 words a day journey. It helped me reset.
In Conclusion
I’m still not cured. The burnout is real. But I’m on my way.
In other news, the Enter Here kickstarter has been funded! If you want a copy and some of the exclusive kickstarter bonuses like a story from me and M. Stevenson, you can back it until the end of the month.
