The 12 books I want to read this year

I mean, allegedly

I’m a slow reader

It’s a problem. I used to be faster. I hit 70 books one year. But the last few years have been droughts. I’ve read some great books, don’t get me wrong, just not a lot of them.

This year, I’m focusing on just 12 books. If I read more than that, great. But here’s my 2024 TBR.

What’s on yours?

One: The Emperor’s Blades by Brian Staveley

This was recommended by a friend. It’s classic space fantasy and so far I’m enjoying the hell out of it. Slowly.

Two: Witch King by Martha Wells

Ngl I couldn’t get into Murderbot, but I’m hoping that Wells’ intricate fantasy will stick with me.

Three: Faebound by Saara El-Arifi

Who doesn’t love an actual new take on fae not done by SJM? (Okay, sorry, I snarked.) I loved El-Arifi’s debut The Final Strife, so I’m stoked to see what she does with fairies.

Four: Light Bringer by Pierce Brown

Yes, I’m finally going to read this long-ass book that’s probably going to make me cry.

Five: Spite House by Johnny Compton

This book has been haunting me and all the horror biggies (inc. Tannarive Due) have recced it, so yeah, I think it’s time.

Six: A Light Most Hateful by Hailey Piper

I get the title wrong every time, but I’m psyched to read a full-length Hailey production, after enjoying her weird cosmic horror novella The Worm and His Kings.

Seven: The Reformatory by Tannarive Due

Horror that will make me uncomfortable on multiple levels? Yes please.

Eight: The Jasad Heir by Sara Hashem

I am obsessed with ancient Egypt and high fantasy so um yes I need to imbibe this please.

Nine: The Wolf of Oren Yaro by K.C. Villoso

This self-pubbed wonder has got me thinking, I need to see how they did it. Plus it promises an epic, brutal fantasy adventure.

Ten: The Shadow of What Was Lost by James Islington

It’ll probably take me all year, but this is quintessential epic fantasy and I needs it.

Eleven: The Hurricane Wars by Thea Guaznon

Teach me how to romantasy teach me teach me how to romantasy

Twelve: The Emperor’s Soul by Brandon Sanderson

Baby’s first Sanderson, because I promised a friend I would.
